2009-2010 Interim Session

Protect Our Groundwater
The Wyoming Legislature's Joint Interim Minerals Committee is pursuing a key environmental topic in the run-up to the 2010 Budget Session. We encourage voters to act now to help shape proposed legislation as soon as possible.

Landfills, and the potential for them to leak toxins into groundwater, continue to draw lawmakers' attention, with potentially negative consequences for our most precious natural resource: clean water.

Lawmakers in 2009 debated legislation at great length which would have let new "risk management" calculations determine whether a landfill should be properly lined. The bill failed outright in the House of Representatives, but now the Minerals Committee is studying the topic further, for potential development of a bill in the 2010 session. The committee meets in Kemmerer June 29 and 30.

We urge voters to contact committee members and ask them to resist further efforts to open the door to unlined landfills in Wyoming.
